AFSCME Local 12 began representing University of Iowa employees in 1943, and since 1975 has been the sole and exclusive bargaining authority for the University's blue collar, clerical, technical and security employees.
To promote the organization of workers in general and public employees in particular. To promote the welfare of the membership and to provide a voice in their determination of the terms and conditions of employment. AFSCME is committed to the process of collective bargaining as the most desirable, democratic, and effective method to achieve this.
General membership meetings are held in our offices on the first Thursday of the month. The Executive Board meets on the Monday before the general membership meeting. The Stewards Committee meets on the third Monday of the month. General membership meetings begin at 6:00 PM, all other meetings begin at 5:30 PM in the local 12 office at suite #19 in the Eastdale Mall at 1700 S. First Ave. in Iowa City.
