Executive Board meeting 04/02/01

Presidents report: There were several items of interest
The local received a letter of thanks from the family of long time local 12 member Linda Weppler. The death of Milo Palmer was reported. Milo was an early organizer of local 12 and was remembered as a great friend of labor. A meeting of the negotiations team from regents was announced for Saturday 4/7/01 in Cedar Falls. We will be leaving the office at 8:00 Sat. morning. Also, there will be a training workshop offered in Des Moines on Saturday the 21st. Because the meeting runs from 9am to 3pm, we will be leaving the office at 6:30 am.
Motion Marron 2nd Strottmann that the local get a van from motor pool to provide transportation to the negotiators meeting for all those wishing to attend. MC
Motion Strottmann 2nd Hagen to get a van from motor pool to provide transportation to Des Moines for training workshop on 4/21/01. MC
Treasurers report: Treasurer Huber reported that the locals finances have stabilized. There are outstanding incentive checks from 1999, which have never, been cashed. The local finished the year 2000 in the black. Full details are, as always, available at the office to any member.
Motion Bartlett 2nd Newmire to accept the treasurers report as filed. MC
Old Business
Report from dues committee: The dues committee presented an amendment to the local 12 constitution. The proposed amendment would raise the dues of those who are paying the maximum by a dollar a month. This would increase the locals income by about 400-500 dollars a month.
Report from the clerical action committee: Next meeting is on Wednesday the 18th at the local offices from 5:30 to 6:30. The agenda is to determine where the committee wants to go and how to get there.
Report from Constitutional Review committee: They have prepared the text for the proposed amendment.
New Business: We had a series of announcements
Workers Memorial Day will be observed on April 28th at a gathering sponsored by Iowa City Federation of Labor at the ped mall in Iowa City. We will gather at noon. More information about this event will follow.
Mayday will be observed by another event at the ped mall followed by a picnic at City Park. Sponsored by the Labor Center and the Labor Party. More information about this event will be posted.
Council 61 will have our convention in Des Moines on July 27-29th. The local is allowed about 8 delegates. Election of Council 61 officers will take place.
There was extensive discussion of the Labor Temple concept as put forward by City Fed and the Carpenters local. There is a great deal to work out, many details are uncertain, and nothing was definitely decided other than to continue exploring the opportunities for Local 12 to participate.
Linda Hagen reported that she is working on a report that details changes in the locals membership. Her report will cover new hires, promotions, demotions and drops.
Barb Cannon spoke in favor of the Local putting the list-serve to greater use.
Carl Boudreau presented a preliminary draft of a report he has been working on which examines turnover rates throughout the University.
Linda Hagen reported on her work with the Governors proposal Partners in Progress.

Ed will send a notice to the local newspapers.
Linda proposed that the local devote much more time to discussing and organizing around the budget cuts. Time will be allotted at the membership meeting to discuss strategy.
