President’s Report & Executive Board Motions:

Old Business

Carl reported on his preliminary analysis of the University’s turnover rates based on job posting data. As you might guess, they were high, very high in some classifications.

Linda reported on her study of the Local 12 membership changes. Our loss of membership is mostly through retirements or leaving the University, rather than dropping out. Most of our new members are replacements who allow us to keep our numbers about the same. These reports prompted much discussion on how to build the local.

Report from Dues Committee: M. Cannon presented text recommended by the committee. It would modify the maximum amount of local dues which may be levied under the local 12 constitution. The effect is to raise the dues by one dollar for those who are currently paying the current maximum, based on income. Explanatory text will be sent out in the newsletter. .Motion for approval, 2nd, MC

Report from Constitutional Change Committee: Dan Johnson-O’Mara read text of proposed local 12 constitutional amendment to change the timing of our elections from Nov. to May. Also to give eboard authority to fill vacancies by appointment with consent and approval by vote of membership. Motion for approval, 2nd, MC. Text will be mailed out in the newsletter.

New Business

Motion Loren Schutt 2nd Jeff Strottmann that the office contact all stewards to announce the next steward’s meeting. MC

Motion Jean Martin 2nd Jeff Strottmann to get a filing cabinet for Linda Hagen’s use at the office. MC

Bob Sass led a discussion of problems with the pay of the chilled water technicians’ classification. The UI has set up a trainee pay matrix and failed to implement advanced starting rates. Issue will be addressed at the negotiations follow-up meeting in Cedar Falls.

Motion Frank Person 2nd Strottmann that Mary be asked to contact AFSCME international education department to ascertain what labor videos are available and see if we can persuade the Iowa City Public Library to acquire them. MC
