What a Typical Residency is Like

A One Week Residency Schedule:

Day One:

Opening Assembly

This is usually a short 20 minute or so assembly of students, either whole school or selected grade levels, depending on size of school, age of students, etc. At this time I introduce myself, talk about what will happen during the week and give a preview of what will happen with the core /target group and others. Of course we sing a few songs together.

Target/Core Group

This group will meet for 45-60 minutes and begin to work on the week's project. For more detail plans see My two most popular Target/Core Group residency plans

Classroom/Exposure Groups

These homeroom/grade level sized groups meet usually for 25-60 minutes depending on the age of students, for 1-3 times throughout the week depending on school size, etc. For more detailed plans see What I do with classroom groups

Days Two through Four:

Repeat Target/Core Group and Classroom/Exposure Groups as scheduled

Evening Parent Session (Optional)

A nice complement to the student activites is to have a short session for parents to explain the goals and activities for the residency, often this can be done in conjunction with a Parent Teacher Organization regular meeting. I find this especially appropriate since in most cases it is parent groups that help with funding such residencies.

Community Outreach (Optional)

Similar to the parent session I am very willing to do sessions explaining arts residency goals to community groups such as senior citizen dining groups, service clubs, etc. as time permits.

Day Five:

Repeat Target/Core Group and Classroom/Exposure Groups as scheduled

Closing Assembly

As a culmination to the residency I play a closing concert. At this time the Core/Target group would perform their work. This concert features sing alongs, selected favorite numbers as chosen by students during the week, and always a few surprises.
